Your 40s are often when skin starts to feel a little different. For many women this is also when perimenopause begins, and the routine that worked for years may stop feeling quite right. This guide keeps things simple: what you might notice, and how to choose a few purposeful steps.
What can change in your 40s
Everyone is different. Some women notice skin that feels drier or less comfortable, a duller-looking complexion, more visible fine lines or dark spots that seem slower to fade. Others notice very little. The NHS lists dry and itchy skin among the changes that can happen around perimenopause and menopause.
There is no need to replace everything at once. Start with what you notice day to day, and change one step at a time.
A simple routine for skin over 40
1. Cleanse gently. Choose a cleanser that removes make-up and SPF without leaving skin tight. Refresh is a gentle gel face wash with aloe and blackberry.
2. Choose one serum with a clear purpose. For a brighter-looking complexion, a vitamin C serum such as Radiance. For skin that looks dull or uneven, niacinamide in New Chapter. For skin that feels less firm, peptides in Poise. For skin that feels dry or tight, Nourish under your moisturiser.
3. Keep the moisturiser you enjoy wearing. There is no need to change it. Kinis serums sit under it or mix into it: a few drops of Harmony when skin feels unsettled, or a little Vitality for daily antioxidant care.
4. Protect every morning. Daily SPF is the step that makes the biggest long-term difference to how skin looks. Light Touch is a tinted mineral SPF30.
Thinking about retinol?
Retinol is popular, but some women find it too much as their skin changes. Bakuchiol is a plant-based ingredient often described as a natural retinol alternative. Read more in our guide to bakuchiol, or see Restore, our evening oil serum.
Not sure where to start?
The Boost Collection brings Nourish, Poise and Restore together in one gift box, for firmer, smoother-looking skin. Or see our FAQs for the serum that suits your main concern.
Kinis Skin products are cosmetics. They are not intended to treat menopause symptoms. If you have concerns about your skin or your health, please speak to your GP or pharmacist.
